Working across a range of services over the past 20 years, I have a wealth of experience as a clinical psychologist. I have a firm grounding in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which I find to be a helpful approach for many people, as it can lead to positive changes and can bring results in a short space of time. In addition to this, other models of psychological therapy have helped to deepen my understanding of the difficulties people might seek help for. I am also interested in understanding how problems re-emerge and how patterns of relating cause difficulties in our relationships with other people and with ourselves. I have increasingly worked with people to help maximise performance in high pressured environments, including business and sporting contexts. I often work with people who are successful in business, sport or creative industries, and have found that setbacks, or the pressure to maintain standards, have exposed underlying vulnerabilities that they want to work through. Please contact Dr. Matthew Richardson by email, phone or using the contact form in order to enquire about availability or for any other general enquiries. Clinic times are currently Tuesday evenings and Fridays (availability from September 2025)

About

Dr. Matthew Richardson, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Chartered Clinical Psychologist (CPsychol), Associate Fellow with the British Psychological Society (AFPBsS), HCPC registered Practitioner Psychologist.

CBT

I specialise in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which is a well tested and validated psychological therapy with an established evidence base. This means that there is substantial evidence from research trials that CBT is effective for a wide range of mental health difficulties, including Depressive Disorders, Anxiety Disorders (including Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Bipolar Disorder and Psychotic Disorders. It is also helpful for overcoming stress and difficulties with low self-esteem.

Mindfulness

I am trained in teaching mindfulness in groups and to individuals. Developing skills in mindfulness can help people manage their difficulties with greater skill, learning to be more present more of the time and getting more in touch with their valued goals and desires.

MBT

Mentalisation-Based Therapy (MBT) is an evidence-based approach to help people with their mood and interpersonal relationships. It is en effective approach for helping people understanding how their early attachments impact their relationships now and learn how to better understand themselves and others, so that they can relate to others with greater skill.

As an experienced psychologist, I can draw on multiple models in my work with clients. A criticism often directed at CBT is that it works only at a superficial level. I think it is an effective intervention, but drawing on other models and approaches can help people understand their difficulties better in order to achieve changes that can be sustained over time.
